A few years ago I stumbled upon Georgette Hayer's regency novels and they can be quite diverting. Admittedly, the audio book versions are better as they have thinned the weaker passages of the books and flow more beautifully. Richard Armitage's reading of the books heightens their romanticism (but that for another day). I always been a longhair person (save for two or three very bad short hair cuts) and for me, nothing says regency novel heroine like long hair done up, albeit buns or curls or braids adorned with a little flourish, i.e. barrettes, flowers, or ribbons. Long hair gives a lady lots of options. I have been known to change my hair a few times a day and while that might seem excessive, the key is to have fun and play with one's hair as it sets a mood. These days my favorite go to style is pulling some of the hair back into a bun and then letting the remainder of the hair cascade down in a braid or ponytail. It adds a nice touch of whimsy or romance to the modern lady. Two photos are below. {My apologies to those ladies with short hair. One day I will explore some options, or even better, you can tell me.}
Option 1 has a braid. Perfect for taking in art at The Met. Option 2 (right photo) has a ponytail. Perfect for Instagram viewing while sipping a coffee at a 'mall.'
Every novel heroine usually has a female companion. They take long long walks together or rather 'turns around the room' and she is with whom our heroine shares her young secrets with. In some unfortunate settings this lady friend can become a rival for a suitor and it can lend to quite a dramatic read. In the happier settings, like in mine, she is a sister and is the truest friend. In the photo below she's sporting a lovely low bun option done up with little flowers to add a touch of floral elegance. She happens to be securing a 'Russian' head dress to a young ballerina before a performance of The Nutcracker.

Option 3 ( left photo) is a low bun adorned with faux roses. Perfect for playing ballet wardrobe mistress.
You might venture to guess that my love of buns and headdresses is rooted in my great love of ballet. Maybe so, but ironically, when I first started ballet, I didn't know how to put my hair up in a bun. I wore two braids to school and then pinned them up with barrettes across the top of my head. I will have to 'dig into the archives' to find a photo to share. More soon. xo
